(Blackwood, NJ) – Dave
Mayer, Dan Hutchison, Michelle Gentek and Frank Schmidt filed petitions
to run for office in Gloucester Township on Monday with an overwhelming
show of support from local residents. “Bring Change” candidates took
their grassroots campaign and message for change door-to-door over the
past several weeks, talking to citizens about what's important to
them. In the process, over 1,100 people signed the Democrats
petitions, although only 50 signatures are needed to run for office.
“It is gratifying to know that residents from all backgrounds and walks of life – from firefighters and little league coaches to teachers and small business owners – share our concern about the future of Gloucester Township and made their voices heard by signing our petitions,” said Mayer, candidate for Mayor. “The more we talk about the need to control spending, end budgetary shell games, and fight for Gloucester Township’s fair share, the more we see neighbors interested in standing up to join our campaign.”
"The grassroots support is a testament to the hunger for change in Gloucester Township and our message for reform," said Hutchison. "People want to elect leaders who will stand up for reform and get things done, not more of the same."
Council candidate and community activist Michelle Gentek added, “People are busy working, raising kids, paying the bills and fighting to make ends meet – but time and time again people offer to join our fight to make Gloucester Township affordable once again. It’s time we fought to preserve our quality of life and make sure we leave our township a better place for our children.”
Prospective candidates for mayor and council must file petitions with at least 50 signatures to qualify to be placed on the ballot. Mayer, Hutchison, Gentek and Schmidt submitted 1,170 signatures, 23 times the needed amount. The incumbent mayor’s slate filed only 190.
